MISSION

Preserve Baltimore’s Korean Immigrant history through installing historical markers around the city’s unofficial Koreatown (areas of Station North and Charles North) and become recognized with historic designation.

볼티모어의 비공식 한인타운 (스테이션 노스와 찰스 노스) 곳곳에 표지판을 설치함으로서 이민자 역사를 보존하고, 역사적 지정 인정을 받을 수 있도록 하는것입니다. 

A Brief History

The Korean community began to form in 1960’s and reached it’s height in the 1990’s in the neighborhood now known as Baltimore’s Charles North and Station North Arts & Entertainment District. During its peak, the neighborhood was home to several Korean-owned businesses, including restaurants, supermarkets, accounting firms, doctors' offices, and even social services. Some key sites include:

  • Seoul Rice Cake Shop
The only shop in the DMV region that made fresh Korean-style rice cakes.

  • Historic Korean Senior Day Care Center where parents of local business owners would spend their days.

  • Hyundai Plaza 
A former major hub for Korean businesses and Korean community life.

  • Far East House 
The first Korean grocery store in Baltimore.

간략한 역사

볼티모어의 한인 커뮤니티는 1960년대부터 형성되어, 현재 노스 찰스와 스테이션 노스 예술과 엔터테인먼트 지역을 중심으로 1990년대에 정점을 맞았습니다. 당시 이 지역에는 한인 소유의 식당, 슈퍼마켓, 회계 법인, 병원, 그리고 사회복지 기관을 포함한 다양한 업종의 사업체들이 밀집해 있었습니다. 주요 사업체들 일부는 다음과 같습니다:  

  • 서울 떡집 워싱턴 D.C., 메릴랜드, 버지니아 지역에서 유일하게 한국식 떡을 만들던 떡집

  • 역사적인 한국인 노인 주간 보호 센터 지역 한인 사업가들의 부모님들이 하루를 보내던 공간

  • 현대 플라자 한인 사업체들과 커뮤니티 활동의 중심지였던 대표적인 장소

  • 파 이스트 하우스 볼티모어 최초의 한국 식료품점

Why This Matters NOW

Baltimore’s “Koreatown” has been rapidly fading from view in recent years. With the accelerated redevelopment in the neighborhood and only a few Korean businesses remaining, the Korean Immigrant history and cultural significance of this neighborhood could vanish forever.

왜 지금 중요한가요?

한때 번성했던 볼티모어의 한인타운은 최근 몇 년 동안 한국인 소유 사업체들의 잇따른 폐업과 가속화로 인해 급속히 사라지고 있습니다. 이러한 변화로 인해 이 지역에 깃든 한국 이민자들의 역사가 사라질 위기에 처해 있습니다.

IMPACT

This project would fully recognize the historical and cultural significance of the Korean Community in Baltimore City. 

Additionally, it could positively impact Baltimore’s APIMEDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, Desi American) communities by demonstrating how they are included as part of Baltimore’s rich cultural history.

볼티모어에서 한국 이민자 커뮤니티와 그 역사적, 문화적 의미를 완전히 인식하는 최초의 지역이 될 것입니다. 

이러한 인정은 또한 볼티모어와 외곽 지역의 현재 및 향후 더 큰 AAPI 아시아-태평양계 공동체에게도 영향을 미쳐, 우리가 볼티모어의 풍부한 문화 역사에 포함되어 있음을 보여주는 중요한 사례가 될것입니다.

보존 및 방향

We want to ensure that our mission is able to honor the history of the Korean community in “Koreatown.” However, we are conscientious that the Station North, Charles North and the Greenmount West area has and always has been home to diverse community groups throughout the years.


Understanding this history of this neighborhood and the complex relationships between cultural groups, has helped us determine how we can both conserve the Korean significance of Koreatown as it undergoes change, and preserve Korean immigrant histories and Baltimore’s AAPI culture without marginalizing other groups that live in this community.



우리는 한인타운으로 불려온 이 지역의 한인 커뮤니티 역사를 존중하고 기리는 것을 사명으로 삼고 있습니다. 하지만 스테이션 노스, 노스 찰스, 그린마운트 웨스트 지역이 수년간 다양한 커뮤니티가 공존해온 공간이라는 점도 인지하고 있습니다. 

이 지역의 역사와 집단 간의 복합적인 관계를 이해하는 과정은, 많은 변화 속에서 한인타운이 지닌 문화적 의미를 보존하고, 다른 집단을 베재시키지 않으면서 한국 이민자 역사와 볼티모어의 AAPI (아시아-태평양계 미국인) 문화를 보존할 방안을 결정하는 데 중요한 기준이 되었습니다.
